Battambang, Cambodia

Bamboo Train Driver Sitting by Rice Paddy and Water Front During Sunset

Are you ready to stop in for a taste of history and some fun?  Battambang is as laid back and genuine Cambodia as you might find and is quite sophisticated at that.  French Colonial type structures still line the streets and there is a fine combination of old and new.  The people are kind and gentle and the options for rooms and food is good enough by far.  Enjoy the beautitful green parks and landscaped areas that are quite endearing.  The monuments, statutes, temples, pagodas and more make a visit to Battambang worth your while.  Many wonderful experiences can be found here and it is but a short ride away from Siem Reap or Phnom Penh.  If you wish, it is quite easy to stop in Battambang on your way into Cambodia and head straight to Siem Reap from there.

Monks near Buddhist Shrines

Enjoy the quaint and quiet market as the families provide for each other symbiotically in a magical way that is quintessential Cambodia.  It is a fun, warm and welcoming experience.  While it is still open you may ride a train that goes through the rice paddies.  There is one catch though, it is a bamboo train which means that you will be whizzing down the tracks on a cart that is made from bamboo with a hole cut in it for your “driver” to steer.  Admittedly it is quite the good time and exhilarating at certain moments.  When you reach the end you can see some local Cambodia families that grow rice and make bricks, the children will be most ecstatic to take you around and show you how it all works.  The people are genuine and a good time is ready to be had in Battambang.  Fun and fine restaurants line the river and you may enjoy live entertainment and a good glass of wine with some inspired cuisine or just hang in the middle of the town and have a bite that is a little more low key, the choice is up to you!

Transportation Options:

From Siem Reap:

From Bangkok:

***Cambodia Visa is on Arrival and should NOT be obtained before you check OUT of Thailand.  They might try to sell you one earlier for a higher price.  The price is in dollars and you will pay 33% more if you pay in Thai Baht, so get American Dollars.  The price is $20USD for most entering and any additional “fees” are not required by law and are being implemented at the discretion of the on-duty workers.  You do not need to pay these fees and many travelers simply say no and they don’t ask again, it is not an aggressive approach.***

From Phnom Penh:

  •  Bus
  • Private Ride
  • Shared MiniVan
